Frederick Albert R Witts
Birth
14/08/1923
Death
11/1990 Sedgemoor Somerset England

It looks as if he remarried to Ivy M Stenson 12/1949 Bridgwater Somerset. In which case the first marriage must have ended soon after Michael was born. From his mother's next marriage when both names are given, I guess his mother reverted to her maiden name and that is why he was brought up using it.

It seems Kathleen Mary Biddiscombe and Michael Samotyj had 3 children -who would be half siblings to Michael J Witts/Biddiscombe - 2 of them are most likey still living  and then there was
Birth reg Kathleen M Samotyj mother's maiden name Biddiscombe Mar qtr 1952 Bridgwater 7c 121
and death reg Kathleen M Samotyj Sept qtr 1952 age 0 Bridgwater 7v 84

Purchase of Michael J Witts birth cert would show who was named as father

I think you are right Grrom -there is a report in Taunton Courier & Western Advertiser date 1 Nov 1947 -decree nisi Frederick Albert Roy Witts of 13 King George Ave Bridgwater against Katharine (should be Kathleen) Mary Witts on the grounds of misconduct

I think you may have missed a generation

Michael's mother was Kathleen Mary Biddiscombe and her parents were Albert James Hugh Biddiscombe and Lilly Louisa Saunders

so they were his grandparents - maybe they brought Michael up?? and that is why he was known as biddiscombe

Maybe this will help

Marriage after Banns 29 Jun 1913
St John the Baptist Eastover Bridgwater
Albert James Hugh Biddiscombe 21 bachelor occ mariner 40 Monmouth St father Albert Biddiscombe (deceased) occ Private in Army
Lily Louisa Saunders 20 spinster 40 Monmouth St father Henry Saunders occ labourer
witnesses H Saunders & B M Saunders

it loks like they had 6 children between 1913 & 1931
their daughter kathleen mary Biddiscombe was born 1926
Kathleen mary Biddiscombe married Frederick Albert Roy Witts in 1944
the marriage did not last and they divorced Nov 1947
Michael J was born earlier 1947 and was registered as Michael J Witts mothers maiden name Biddiscombe
It seems Michael J was reared as Michael J Biddiscombe
Kathleen remarried in 1949 to Michael Samotyj
they had 3 children together but one died in infancy
Kathleen's parents (and Michael John Biddiscombe's grandparents ) died in 1968 and 1970
Death reg Albert james Hugh Biddiscombe b 1891 died 1968
Lily Louisa Biddiscombe (nee Saunders) b 1893 died 1970

Hope this helps you to piece together your tree-it is a little complicated

Hi, yes, I agree with Suz’s summary, it is complicated and I think as well that you have missed a generation and it was his grandmother who was a Saunders, not his mother. Where did you get the information that his mother’ name was Saunders?

Given also that the marriage broke up so soon after Michael’s birth, you really need to try and find the reasons given for divorce, it could be that there were doubts about Frederick Witts being his father.
