Manchester District in 1939 Register
« on: Monday 30 April 18 04:43 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
Could someone please help with finding out what district this address would be in.  In1939 the family I am looking at , Read, lived at 59 Bury Street.  I have looked up this area and it says that it is Radcliffe.  However, the grandson of this family, who now lives in Canada, says that he doesn’t remember them living in Radcliffe. Thought it was Gorton. The district given at the top of the register page is 464-5.  Would there have been more than one Bury Street and wha district wold it be in?
Looking forward to hearing your responses.
Thank you,
Alva

There certainly was a Bury Street in Gorton - just Google it.

If I've found the right one it is in Leigh just off Railway Road.

Bury Street is shown in my Manchester street by street atlas from around 1979, when we moved to Cheadle Hulme.

If you look at the attached map, to the left of St James Church there were a number of roads.  Nearest the church was St James Street, then Whalley Street and then Bury Street.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Here's a 1930's map showing Bury Street next to Whalley Street, as in the 1939 Register

It clearly shows it is Manchester. If the register were Radcliffe it would show Radcliffe as the top of the page  so the maps for Gorton are correct.

If you can look up the family on the 1939 Register on FindMyPast, below the transcription there will be a map of where they lived in 1939. Using the box top left of the map you can pull up a present day map which will also show where they lived.  Many libraries give free access to FindMyPast.

Understandable. When search addresses for Bury Street there are an awful lot of them! Fortunately not all of them have a number 59.
