John Shaw baptism
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 16:26 BST (UK) »
Hi does anyone have access to the baptism of John Shaw on 29 January 1837. If so I was wondering if the father's name was recorded. Mother was Harriet Shaw.

The only transcription I can find only gives the mother's name, Harriett Shaw. Possible he was illegitimate.

Additional information from parish register:

Husband living, but been confined in an Asylum for ten years past.

And it does say that Harriet is a Married Woman.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

That explains quite a bit to me. Although child was baptized Shaw he is recorded in later censuses as Wilson. Harriet Shaw married John Wilson in 1839 shortly after her first husband John Shaw died I suspect in 1839.

Any ideas where the asylum would be and whether any records are available anywhere  ;)

Possibly John was in the South Yorkshire Asylum at Wadsley.  Records of admissions are available on FindMyPast, there are 8 instances of John Shaw.  I'm having trouble, unfortunately, at the moment accessing the results.

I suggest Wadsley because one of my family members was admitted there, and the family came from Halifax area.

Added:  Sorry, looks like Wadsley didn't open until 1872.

Mr Wiki suggests that the West Riding had 4 Asylums.  The only one open in 1838 was Stanley Royd Hospital, Stanley, Wakefield.

Added:  It seems that West Yorkshire Archive Service have the admission records at Wakefield.

Thanks for the excellent information BumbleB  :D. I was wondering if the burial record for John Shaw on 19/2/1839 would have his abode recorded. Again I am not certain it is the right burial but it would make sense as Harriet remarried not long after that.

The burial entry for John on 19 February 1839 just states that his abode is Selby and that he is aged 60.  But I can't see a death registration entry for John Shaw aged 60 using the GRO facility.  There is one in March quarter 1839 in Wakefield District - aged 77.
