Could Elizabeth be mistaken for Isabella
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 18:16 BST (UK) »

My great great grandparents had a daughter Isabella Campbell born November 1855 In Dalkeith Midlothian I have never been able to find any other information on her.
They had a few children who died very young in the late 1850s one in particular Elizabeth who died February 1857 aged 1 year  cause of death was given as smallpox 8 days  her death was registered  by John Fairbairn a shoemaker of Dalkeith  .Could it be possible that he mistook the name and registered Isabella as Elizabeth.
There are no births  for this couple registered pre 1855

Thank you

If it's any help, Isabella is a variant of Elizabeth. According to this site:
http://www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Isabel.html
the two names have long been considered interchangeable in Scotland.

I've always found that curious, because while Isabella is the Spanish equivalent of Elizabeth, yet in Scotland it is more often used as a name in its own right - you only have to see how many families had both an Elizabeth and an Isabella, and even, sometimes, an Elspet, which is another variant of Elizabeth.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I too am under the impression that the two names are virtually interchangeable. That is interesting what you have said, Forfarian.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

That's what threw me off the scent for one of our ancestors.  She was Isabella and there was also an Elizabeth from the same era (about 1700) and area.  Elizabeth's granddaughter became an extremely wealthy heiress.  I had a hunch the families might be connected but I didn't think there'd be an Elizabeth and Isabella in the same family.

In the end I did find the proof.  A third sister mentions both of them and their descendants in her will, and I found a record which says that Isabella's husband is curator for Elizabeth's daughters.

There would be no births registered pre 1855, as that is the year registration began in Scotland.

Have you checked the Parish Records?

Thank you everyone for all the advice . I trawled OPR's at Register House for Isabella's siblings who were born pre 1855 but could find none .

I did however find their  deaths after registration .
