I thought I'd ask in case anyone is up for a challenge!

I have 4 Jones children, struggling to get any more information on them other than year born.
Wilfred John Jones, 1906
William George Jones, 1908
Florence Annie Jones, 1910
Doris Mary Jones, 1913, christened 1914
all born in Tavistock, Devon with mother's maiden name Helson. The first 3 children appear on the 1911 census, with their mother, Florence in Tavistock.

and family stories - that Wilfred was estranged from the family and returned around 1945. He was described as a bit of a 'ladies' man and was one of the first to have a car.
At one point Florence (or Flo) lived at Neath Rd, Plymouth (as did their mother Florence Helson and their half sister, Edith Hopper)

With Jones being such a common name, any ideas on how I can get more information? Thank you

you could try 1939 if you had exact dates of birth.

There is a Doris M. Jones (Davey) living in Plymouth in the 1939.  Check her out and see what you think.  No-one else listed with her.

With a name like Jones I think you would do well to consider obtaining birth certs for the children.  With exact dates of birth it will be easier to track them in the 1939.

JONES, WILFRED  JOHN     HELSON
GRO Reference: 1906  D Quarter in TAVISTOCK  Volume 05B  Page 328

JONES, WILLIAM  GEORGE     HELSON
GRO Reference: 1908  S Quarter in TAVISTOCK  Volume 05B  Page 310

JONES, FLORENCE  ANNIE     HELSON
GRO Reference: 1910  M Quarter in TAVISTOCK  Volume 05B  Page 307

JONES, DORIS  MARY     HELSON
GRO Reference: 1913  D Quarter in TAVISTOCK  Volume 05B  Page 621

You can order the certs as pdfs which is cheaper than a certificate.  Pdfs cost £6.

This death for a Doris looks like a good match:
Doris M Davey age 55 (born 1914/1913)  registered death in March quarter 1969 in Plymouth.

There does look to be one Davey/Jones birth in Plymouth, and many elsewhere.

We had a Jones match on DNA but couldn't work out the connection the American didn't know much about his ancestors before they arrived in US eventu ally I looked at lodgers names and wife's maiden name for his great grandfather turned out he.did marrived anotherJones and she was the connection to my great grandfather ..his sister hence came out as 3rd cousin .

Yes, I agree. I need to get the exact birth dates of the first 3 children to really find them in the 1939 register. Thank you for the possible death of Doris, I will look it up.

It certainly makes other surnames seem a lot easier! Thanks everyone. :)
