Akron Goodyear Rubber company
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 19:18 BST (UK) »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me with this question. I have been trying to find out what the city of Akron in Ohio was like around 1900. I know that the Goodyear Tyre company opened there in 1898 and that many migrants headed there for work. I also have been looking at the Cities Directories which are available for Akron - one person I am looking at is recorded as follows:
1908 Frank R Harman ( Margaret J) Foreman D R Co. res 448 Pine
1911 Frank R Harman ( Margaret J) Works D rubber Co.  res. 865 Oberlin
Can anyone tell me if this was part of the Goodyear company.
Thanks to anyone who has read my question.

There were four major tyre companies Goodrich Corporation (1869), Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Company (1898), Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company (1900), and General Tyre (1915) were all headquartered in the city.

On the WW1 Draft for Frank Raymond Harman he worked for Acmex Motor Tyre Co.

In the 1914 city directory Frank R and Margaret J Harman worked at Baker El Service Station - res 2 Collinwood Ave Akron.

In 1917 Frank R was a salesman (Margaret J) - res 962 Collingwood Ave Akron.

Hi  Erato and Sandra - you have both given me information I hadn't come across before. There is certainly a lot of information stored about Akron in the library collection! I have found in there all the City's Directories so will be able to search through and find the years that didn't come up on Ancestry.
Thank you both

This may be your D rubber company:  Diamond Rubber, looks like they merged with BF Goodrich

Thanks Genealiza - that does sound like a possibility, quite understandable to just shorten it to D Rubber company when there were several in the town. The pictures of the works are great too - thanks
