Looking for Winifred Connaughton (1849-1946)
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 17:38 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information on Winifred Connaughton (1849-1946). She married my great grandfather, Andrew Doyle around 1879 just before he left the 88th Regiment of Foot (The Connaught Rangers) after 21 years service. He was originally from Enniscorthy Co Wexford and his 1880 discharge papers show his intention to return there. I found them, however, living in Manchester in the 1881 census. The had three daughters there, Mary Jane, Maggie and Annie before returning to Enniscorthy where Andrew passed away from pneumonia in 1889 whilst Winifred was pregnant with my grandfather Patrick Doyle. Any information about Winifred would be gratefully received. I have been searching for her birth record or their marriage record without success.

Yes, I've trawled through there a lot with various search terms to no avail. She is listed as Winifred Connaughton on her daughter Mary Jane's birth certificate from Hulme, Manchester though. He was discharged from the Army in 1880. By that time the Connaught Rangers were garrisoned in Galway (which is where his discharge papers are marked) having previously been in Boyle, Roscommon. He had spent some time in Boyle, Athlone and Curragh camp previously but his last two years were spent in South Africa and Mauritius. They are together in Manchester in 1881. Perhaps they "eloped" from Ireland to Manchester?

They also had a son Timothy in 1885:

Winifred and the two boys in 1901:

The 1881 census has both Andrew and Winifred as unmarried.

Thanks Debra,
Yes unfortunately Timothy passed away at aged 18, I also noticed the 1881 Manchester census says they are unmarried although have the same surname. Have tried to find any marriage in Manchester too, again to no avail. She would have been 29/30 when they went to Manchester, he was around 45. They are both at the older end of the spectrum to be getting married, but it seems to me that people were a lot older when they got married in those times. Bit of a mystery! As is what happened to daughters Mary Jane and Maggie - although I do have some disjointed stuff that might be daughter Mary Jane - it's not good for her though.

In 1901 she says she was born in Roscommon.  This one perhaps?  Winifred daughter of Patrick and Hanora 7 Jul 1844 at Killucan, Diocese of Elphin, County of Roscommon.

Location is spot on, age is about 5 years older than expected but within an acceptable range considering everything. Given that I had not been able to find her before all I can say is many thanks Debra!
