I wonder if this is John's death in Victoria in July 1867 - not really near Castlemaine, but about the right age?
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5773416

"Lupton - on the 11th inst. at Huntly near Sandhurst, Victoria, John Lupton, formerly PPGMMUIOOF, Morning Star Lodge, Leeds, Yorkshire, aged fifty seven years. Yorkshire papers please copy."

I can't see a death reg on the Vic BDM though.

Also Mary Ann's death notice in 1870 says she was the daughter of George ATKINSON of Doncaster.  ;)

Thankyou. Don't know that it would be the right John because wasn't he born circa 1809? The Erringtons would have gone around Bendigo first because they were looking for gold and Huntly is near Bendigo and Castlemaine is not that far from there. I could find only one anywhere near relevant death record for a John Lupton in Victoria from 1877 aged 74 with no details except he was born in Gravesend. Wrong John Lupton. And what does PPGMMUIOOF mean please. Pardon my ignorance. Mary Ann Atkinson is the right gal then. Thanks again.

A death in 1867 at age 57 puts his birth c1810 by my calculation  ;) pretty close I think.

Whilst I don't know exactly what the initials stand for, probably something to do with Freemasonry or Odd Fellows. Need to look up the Morning Star Lodge, Leeds.

Modified to add:
Yes MUIOOF is Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows
PPGM could be    Past Provincial Grand Master

Yes, the death in 1877 is definitely not your John LUPTON. He apparently was a seaman who arrived in 1834

Hahaha. All I can say is I’ve been up since 5.00am. The brain’s shutting down and time I went to bed. Of course you are right and probably is the right John. Wow! Thanks.

;D ;D No worries! I know that feeling.

It might be an idea to put a request on the Australia board to see if anyone can find the death registration for John in 1867, as a death certificate from this time should show parents, spouse and children's names (if known). I can't see a registration on the Vic BDM index, but others might have better luck?

Thank you. I'll do that. The government departments are not generously forthcoming with info here. For instance, I've put a search in for a marriage which definitely took place between 1940-50 in a certain area in NSW and absolutely no results or anything that looked like it. Other info should have popped up about different things too but no. Anyway, I'll get there. It's frustrating but I'm addicted. :)

Re Alice MIDDLETON's parents - there is a marriage on familysearch for William MIDDLETON and Ann WETHERELL at Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland in 1809 - a possibility.

Modified to add:
A baptism for Alice MIDDLETON at Kirkby Lonsdale on 24 Sept 1809 to parents William and Anne.
Other baptisms to William and Anne at Kirkby Lonsdale:
18 Oct 1812  Jenny Wetherall MIDDLETON
