Henry (Harry) Forrest, Whitwell
« on: Tuesday 08 May 18 23:53 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone help me. My Gt Gt uncle was a Henry Forrest, son of Sam and Fanny Stubbings, born around 1883 in Hardwick, Nottinghamshire before moving to Whitwell, Derbs. He didn't serve during the Great War. He was left to bring up a young, disabled daughter. Would this be a good enough reason for him not to serve?

Also, second question, it doesn't appear that he married - I can't find a record of marriage anywhere. I have been told that Dorothy Mays mother, Elsie Hudson, abandoned the child and didn't want to know. Was this usual for the father to take on the child back in those days? Are there any other examples of this happening with (possibly) unwed parents?

His obituary states that his wife died young but this appears to be a cover story as I was told by his niece (my first cousin twice removed) that he never married.

It all seems very odd to me for the time (1914). If anyone can offer advice, it would be very much appreciated.

Neil.

Was Dorothy May registered as Forrest or Hudson?  When and where was she born?

I actually have her birth certificate and was registered as Hudson with no father listed.

Presumably born before the 1914 marriage?

Thank you Carolew, in all the years I've searched, I've never found this and I thought I knew what I was doing lol! I've always used Ancestry. I'll try FreeBSD for some other searches now.
