Old location from 1939 register?
« on: Saturday 12 May 18 11:34 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with a geography question please. I've been looking at the 1939 Register (free access from Ancestry this weekend!), and a number of my wife's relatives are listed as living in Sanctuarie in Hastings. I've done a Google search and can't see anything relevant, so am guessing this doesn't exist any more, or has been renamed. Does anyone know where this was/is in Hastings or anything about it?

Many thanks for any help.
Jon.

Hi, thanks for the reply, and yes of course. It's Ellen L Drew (nee Peacham) and George F Drew, and
Lilian M  Wise (nee Peacham, Ellen's sister).

Sanctuarie is the name of the house. According to the address it was on Crowland Road. Comparing the 1939 map to a present day one it is now called Beauharrow Road and is off Battle Road  in the Castleham area of the town.

Hi Emeltom,

Thanks so much for your help and information, that's great to know. Would your estimate or understanding be that the house no longer exists? Looking at Google Street View the road looks like a combination of newer and older houses. I guess if the house name had changed it would be harder to identify if still standing.

Best wishes,
Jon.

I think it’s crowhurst road.
If you look at a map you can see wishing Tree Road runs into crowhurst road at iron latch hill and you can see all those names on that page
Following the road NW you come to Mayfield farm as on the sheet but the properties on the next page are back in wishing tree  road!

The bit you want is in the lower left corner 2nd square in. The relevant intersection is pretty much in the middle of that square

Looking again, I agree, it's Crowhurst Road which has been wrongly transcribed as Crowland.

Bodiam Drive seems to follow the path of some on the "old" Crowhurst Road.

This map shows how the area has changed. Crowhurst Road is not marked on this old map (but it is named on the one posted by Mckha489):

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17&lat=50.8703&lon=0.5269&layers=168&right=BingHyb

The area seems to be full of Closes and new builds and roads which have ploughed through the landscape. I would be surprised if the house still exists.

Hi, thanks everyone for your help and insights, that's really useful. Makes sense too, as George and Ellen Drew ended up living in Crowhurst in later life!

Best wishes,
Jon.
