If I am reading this news item posted by Gerry correctly.

Thomas LLEWELLYN, was the accused (later acquitted)
He was marriad to Marcia
Mary Ann DAVIES  was married to James DAVIES, and she was nee LLEWELLYN, being Thomas' sister.

Mary Ann deserting her husband and numerous children  ran away with Alfred GIRLING and called herself GIRLING. Alfred also deaerted spouse and numerous children.

The couple went to South Africa where Mary Ann had three children, all Alfred's.
Thomas her brother went to SA too for a while.

So the births you are seeing in your opening post in South Africa, are not Sarah Ann's but Mary Ann's.

One of the three was alive at the time of the trial, named Ruby.

Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. Wed 14 Oct 1914

"Up until a little over 12 months ago she had resided with Girling. Three children were born to her of which Girling was the father. Two were dead and one (Ruby) living……..She made three visits to Australia from South Africa in connection with the children by her lawful husband ….. "

For your interest.

Obituary Mary Ann DAVIES. Published 29th Nov, 1928

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/21349607

Apart from her children with James DAVIES, there is mention of "another" at Maryborough.

This seems likely to be Ruby.

Incorrect.Struck through
Ruby married in Brisbane and lived at Wynnum and divorced in Brisbane too.

Again, thank you! My neighbour, whose grandfather this chap was, is amazed!

The bit that confuses me is "wife of James Davies, whom she had left 10 years ago, when she went to South Africa with deceased" followed by " about 13 years ago, when witness came over from South Africa"............. maybe I'm missing something??

Well, the few pieces of documented evidence show this.

Order re. desertion by Alfred of his family 1898
Child born in South Africa 1899. This was probably Audrey, child of Mary Ann and Alfred.

So it seem like 12/13 years from then to the time of the trial in 1914.
