Registration Books

Hi, does anybody know if you can still look at the original books that we had to use before they were digitised if so where,

Which Registration Books? Do you mean the Civil Registration of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, or Parish Registers, and which country?

Each country has its own records office which hold the records as well as fiche and film that you can visit and research for that county and the National Archives at Kew holds records for England/Wales, PRONI in Belfast and the National Archives of Scotland  are based in Edinburgh.

There are other places it really depends on what records you wish to view

If you mean the GRO Index volumes that  were at The Family Record Centre, then the answer isNo,

Original parish registers are mostly held in County Record Offices.  Once they have been digitised, the images are sufficient for our research.  Given the age and fragility of many records, archivists are often reluctant to let the public handle the originals.

Hi Thankyou for all your replies but we have been unable to find my grandfather and his brothers birth l dont think they were mistranscribed  as they were born 2 years apart the only thing we can think of is that the woman who there father married 2 years later was not there mother and we thought we could look at the books, l cant remember what they were called l only used them once a good few years ago at l think it was called Middleton House in Islington. I have found records nearly 2oo years ago in Italy and very frustrated l cant find their births in UK in 1876.

The civil record of birth you can look at the indexes, try freebmd and once you have found it, then using that index apply and pay for a birth cert from the GRO, you can't search birth certificates.... you of course can search parish records for a baptism

It is possible that if they were born in the 1870's that the births were not registered.  The birth registration system was tightened up at the end of that decade.
