Quartering St Owen arms.
« on: Monday 21 May 18 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi
If someone has any spare time and is a dab hand at heraldry, could they draw up the full arms with quarterings for the St Owen family, They are listed as Following -
1. Downton - 'Two organ pipes between 9 cross crosslets' (No colouring is given but I have seen one rendition give the background as Argent/white, Crosslets as Azure/Blue and the 2 single organ pipes as Gu/Red)
2. St Owen - 'Barry of Six, Or and Gu.'
3. Oteby - 'Vert, a Fess Argent, in a Chief Gu, a Chevron Argent.'
4. Brewse - 'Azure, a Lion Rampant between ten cross crosslets Or, crowned Gu'
5. Tyrrell - Azure, a Lion Rampant Argent, a border engr Or.'

Thank you

What is your source for this blazon (description)? I'm not an expert, just an informed enthusiast, but I've never seen organ pipes heraldically, before, and the fact that you list five quarterings suggests that it is technically incomplete.  Is the 5th on top, centrally?

You could try searching for each quarter individually.

All are from visitation of Herefordshire. St Owen of Gerneston.
I'm assuming 5th is on top central or on bottom central?
No, I havent been able to find anything relating to them how they are listed here.
The Brewse/Braose arms you can find for the reinstation of the Senior line, Summoned as Barons Braose but with a varying amount of Crosslets so not exactly what is given here.
Ive come across only one for the Tyrrell family of Hertfordshire. The problem with this is that the St Owens list descent from a 'Sir Hugh Tyrrell. Lord of Bromscroft, Shropshire and Tyrrells Court, Hertfordshire. But he is still elusive as i cant really find anything of Tyrrells in this area. His heir is given as 'Joane/Jane Tyrrell who marries John St Owen Esq so I would think he had no sons.

Yes the Organ pipes are an odd one which I too, Have not seen before and have found nowhere else apart from a small picture on someones tree.
So I'm not sure if they were adopted through Heralds or if the family made them. But Heralds listed them so they didnt seem to have any query.

This is the only pic I could see of the Downton arms as they are listed on visitation. Its similar of the CoA's you see on those fake family CoA websites and seems to come from the Burkes armory description, With a different number of Crosslets than visitation.
This is what is given on Burkes Armory of this family.

The Tyrrells of Herefordshire and Hertfordshire differ but both have 'Az. A lion rampant. Ar.' at the start of their Arms which perhaps indicates some link.
Hereford Tyrrells - 'Az. A Lion Rampant. Ar. A Bend Indented Gu.'
Hertford Tyrrells - 'Az. A Lion Rampant. Ar. A Border Engr. Or.'

The source is the published Visitation of Herefordshire, ed. by Frederick W. Weaver, printed by William Pollard and Co., Exeter, 1886.

While "Quarterly of five" is unusual (one would normally expect the first quarter to be repeated as a sixth quarter), it's not unheard of. The arrangement on the shield would be a row of three and beneath it a row of two.
