Recent Birth Certificates

Not sure if this is the right board so feel free to move it if need be.

If you order a recent (1982) birth certificate from the GRO as well as the usual GRO references it asks for the following mandatory information


Date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)*
Place of birth *
Father’s/Parent’s surname *
Father’s/Parent’s forename(s) *
Mother's maiden surname *
Mother's surname at time of the birth
Mother's forename(s) *

However some commercial sites (although charging much more) do not ask for this mandatory information eg Ancestry only asks for the persons name and the GRO reference numbers

(Local registrars seem to fall somewhere between the two depending which one you approach).

My question is: Can these commercial sites really supply the birth certificates without asking for all the mandatory information (and if so what is the point of the GRO asking for it if there is such an easy way to get around it)

This is what Ancestry say about ordering birth certificates from them "The only caveat to this is that for births that occurred within the past 50 years, the full details are required to be provided (which includes full date of birth, and parents' names including the mother's maiden name). This is to protect against identity fraud."

This is what the GRO requires, and any organisation ordering from the GRO will need this information.
From the GRO You will be prompted to supply further details for more recent births and deaths (within the last 50 years) as you complete the online application form.

From another company's web site "The required information depends upon when the birth took place. For events within the past 50 years, we require that all sections are completed on the application form."

Thanks for that. I will have another look at the local registrar as they did not specify such requirements when I entered the persons name and the year 1982. Much appreciated.
