Ayres Family in Launceston, Cornwall
« on: Friday 25 May 18 17:31 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone:

I'm looking for an Ayres family that lived on Westgate Street, Launceston in the 1920's. They're not in the 1911 Census that I can see.

My father stated that a woman by the name of "C. Ayres" on that street in 1920, was his sister which is puzzling to his descendants.

Any ideas?

Thank you - Warren

I'd have started by looking for siblings of your father.
What was his birthplace, name and birth year?

That's the problem. We don't know if the surname he went by was his real surname.

He changed his birthdate and birthplace and his "next of kin" as it suited him. There are no records of his birth anywhere.

This "C. Ayres" sister is a new one to us. He stated this Ayres connection in 1920 on military papers. We are just grasping at straws.

and you've still not answered any questions.

Relate what names and dates that you know of.

People on here will sift through and see what is a half-lie and what's a whopping untruth

Thank you for your response.

However, there is no point in us posting decades worth of prior research looking for a man with a possibly fictional surname, apparently born on not one but two continents, on numerous dates.

Our focus is any information about:

A woman by the name of "C. Ayres" who lived on Westgate Street, Launceston, in 1920.

Cheers - from Canada

Thank you - Warren

A slightly belated warm welcome to Rootschat.

While I appreciate that you don't want to clog this thread up with "decades worth of prior research looking for a man with a possibly fictional surname, apparently born on not one but two continents, on numerous dates" it would be useful for us to know the name and regiment given on the military papers.

Back to C AYRES of Westgate Street Launceston (to avoid us duplicating your research) - have you looked at the 1911 census in case she was on there?  Or any electoral rolls (if available online) after 1918?

Philip

UPDATE: the only AYRES I can see in Launceston in 1911 are (on familysearch index) are:
William 50, Ellen 50, Winifred Annie 20, Arthur Llewellyn 14, Ruth Olive 8.

When he was quoting Ayres as his sister what name did he give himself on the military papers.

On the off-chance I looked for AYRES deaths in Launceston 1920-1983 on FreeBMD.
Four women, two men, all would have been adults in the 1920s, but no obvious matches.

FindMyPest have England/Wales electoral rolls
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/england-and-wales-electoral-registers-1832-1932

The 1939 Register has Henry C and Elizabeth A AYRES in Launceston, both born 1872

It could be worth checking these out to find street addresses to see if they could be linked to C AYRES.

If you let us know what name(s) the 1920s military man was using, we might be able to search for matching relatives and marriages.  Otherwise, I don't know how we could help,

Philip
