If you're using something like Ancestry you should get in the habit of downloading all the documents that it magically produces for you because they're only there as long your subscription lasts. Same applies to other people's photographs, which you may want to use (with their permission).

For backups I'd highly recommend using an online backup solution. There are plenty that will give you more than enough capacity for a family tree for free. The big advantage is that your backups are then protected from fire and theft, which they're not if you're backing up locally.
