John Gilligan

John Giligan was born at sea 24 Sept 1820 and baptised at Halifax Nth America. At archives he was enrolled at Greenwich Hospital School in 1830 and from family search he was in the English merchant navy. His father James died 1832 and he is not with his Mother Mary who died 1857 in census. Can anyone see him else where or flesh out the merchant navy angle please.

Where was his mother on the census records please which may help to establish where John enlisted?

Chatham Kent in 1841 and Rochester in 1851 and  both parents buried Chatham.  At a free search at FindMyPast they have a Merchant Navy event for 1845. Family search require you to go into a  FS centre.

A BIG thank you to those who helped me on the 1845 navy hit. We now know that he is John James Gilligan, had been in the navy since 14, still alive thru to 1846, unmarried thru to 1845, and if a record does not include his birth date  but a description he was 5ft 6in with dark brown hair

We now have John alive in 1859 after two stops at the Drenaught Seamans Hospital in 1853 and 1859.Discharged from Navy in 1846 and then in Merchant Navy till  at least the 1859 hospital trip.

NSW unassisted passenger lists 1826-1922:
John Gilligan b. c1820
Departure = South Sea Islands - Arrival = Sydney, NSW 21/05/1863
Ship = Juverna

Original has him as a seaman [AB] - Of what nation = at sea [Would take that to be birth details]

Looks as though he is still around in 1865

Age = 45y. Arrival Sydney, NSW 27 Mar 1865. Gives 'at sea' as Nation.
Rating = AB. Ship = Ashburton.

Thanks Geoff. Has to be him. There can't have been many J.G's born at sea in 1820 who then went on to be sailors. Unassisted Passenger - so he made the move south. Ashburton would likely make it a Kiwi ship,  perhaps,  unless they were naming ships after Melbourne suburbs.
Well his death is not registered in NZ or the five states. Unless they had his age out by nine years  Gosh having the parents names for Ozzy records is so user friendly

Yeah, not the easiest soul to follow, given his birth and occ..

The 2 previous ships have 'of Sydney' on the original. The one below has 'of Melbourne'.
