Help needed finding the correct mother and father of John Ladkin
« on: Friday 01 June 18 14:53 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help me discover who the parents of JOHN LADKIN born approx. 1827 in  is please?

JOHN LADKIN aged 25 married SARAH MEDLOW aged 24 on 28 July 1852 in Broughton Astley. On the marriage certificate John's father is called WILLIAM LADKIN. Sarah's is called SAMUEL MEDLOW.

I have gone down the census records to find the following:

1881 - John (54) and Sarah (52) living at Charlotte St, Birmingham (commission agent)

1871 - John (44), Sarah (43), Mary (16) and William (7) at Charlotte St, Birmingham

1861 - John (31), Sarah (32), Mary (6) and Arthur (2 months) at Lewes Rd, Brighton (soldier)

1851 - John (24) at Ashton Barracks, Lancashire (weaver)

I have a possible death record for John at Stowe Nine Church in Northampton on 24 Aug 1887.

John's son WILLIAM DORMAN LADKIN was married in 1885, with John down as a traveller. William was born in Cork, so I presume this was due to John's time in the army.

This is where I get a little bit stuck and cannot work out John's parents. It says on the marriage certificate that his father's name is WILLIAM, but I can't find anything else to support this. It is probably staring me right in the face! Can anyone help please?

Thank you!  :D

have you searched the parish records of Broughton where John is allegedly born.

What is your opinion of the 1841 census where a 10 year old John Ladkin is living in the household of a 40 year old Thomas Ladkin also present is a 10 year old Thomas Ladkin. As relationships are not given on the 41 census you cannot assume whether Thomas Snr is John's father or another relative. similarly you can not assume that Thomas jnr is a twin or brother to John
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I think I may have answered my own question... I think the father was WILLIAM as per the marriage certificate, and his mother was SUSANNA DORMAN. That would certainly fit in with John's son's middle name.

have you seen this record

If there was one John Ladkin born to a William Ladkin in Broughton there could very easily be another one with the latter John being given the same name as the first John who died aged 2.

What was Johns Fathers occp from the M/C?

He was a baker.

On a later census record, it appears Susanna is also a baker aged 50.
