Why do you say you have exhausted the Sewell line - an Emma Sewell did die in Sheffield in 1943 aged 73 (so b abt 1873) but how has she been linked to Emma Jane Sewell b 1868 (whose family seems to have been in Sheffield only briefly)?

Does the deceased Emma not look more likely to be, for example, the widowed Emma Sewell b 1873 who was living in Sheffield in 1939?

Also found a Sheffield Bottom in Berkshire so not the obvious one in Yorkshire. Evelyns only says Sheffield.
Even though we've checked the Sewell line she must have a connection to the sewell or sim family as why was she there at 8 yrs old

In your work on the Sewell line did you identify the precise birthdate of Emma Jane Sewell b 1868 for comparison with the 21 July 1868 birthdate claimed by the mysterious Evelyn Hood?

Not sure which entry you mean?  Emma Jane’s birth registration is indexed on FreeBMD and GRO Online.

Evelyn’s birthdate is stated in the 1939 Register.

I'd just reached that conclusion myself, avm228!

In fact, I don't think Emma (aka Evelyn) was ever married to a Mr. Hood and that it's more than likely she was the mother of Ivy Dorothy.  At Ivy's baptism her father shown as William Hood, carpenter, and I couldn't find a likely candidate although mother is at least shown as Emma.

How did women get away with baptising an illegitimate child as if born of a lawful union - surely the father would be at the baptism??   This situation has come up on various posts of late.

So, Evelyn Hood, widow didn't exist (although she was born in Sheffield) and was actually Emma Jane Sewell born Sept.qtr.1868 Sheffield - she was not married to a Mr. Hood (William or Reuben) and appears to have had at least 2 illegitimate children neither of whom had their birth registered (either as Hood or Sewell) although Ivy at least was christened albeit with a fictitious father.

Yes, that’s about the sum of how it looks to me :)

Can’t see Emma/Evelyn in 1901 yet.
