Hi Jebber,

Thank you for looking,

Edith was born 24/4/1889,

George was the son of William and Jane (Brown) Cook so he was not illegitimate.

Hi Jaz,

I was thrown by the name George Louis because I could only find one born in Lincolnshire, there isn’t one in Wiltshire, it would appear that yours was registered John George March quarter 1866, and baptised George Louis on the 3rd June 1866.

Unfortunately it still doesn’t explain the Smith connection.

I probably have not read the earlier posts properly but I wonder if the names in the left hand margin are god parents

Hi Jebber,

So reading this, George Louis Cook my great grandfather was John George Cook by birth,  i have him born in Upavon Wiltshire, on census and baptism, he has always been a bit of a mystery man, as i cannot find a death for him and no one in the family knows of what happened to him after he and my great gran  married and left Wiltshire  for Wales, the 1891 census with his surname Smith is the last record of him, i think i am losing the plot myself now!

I found  a birth and death for a Lewis/Louis Cook/e born Rushall Wiltshire and died a year later Upavon same parents William and Jane, so may explain how John George became George Louis, i think and hope,
