Barbara Jackson b.1838
« on: Monday 11 June 18 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I am tracing Barbara and also her husband Robert Robson. They married 25/9/1859 in St John's Parish, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Both are Full Age and Robert is recorded as a Mill Wright.

Unfortunately Robert's father & father occupation are struck out which makes me think he may be illegitimate.

Barbara's father is William Jackson ans is a Miller. I found a birth for a Barbara:

Barbara Jackson chr 8 Aug 1838 Longbenton, Northumberland
dau of William & Hannah Jackson

and a marriage for a William & Hannah:

William Jackson m Hannah Baker 25 Dec 1824 All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland,
FHL Film Number:   1068967

There is no record of them in the 1841 census but I did find a William & Hannah in the 1851 census living at Seafield, Durham, England, Little Benton, Longbenton but Barbara is not there, nor anywhere else.

I found Barbara & Robert in the 1851 census living at Bishop Auckland with 1 child Robert 8 months old. Robert gives his birthplace as Saffield, Co.Durham which is probably Fatfield, Co. Durham. I found them again in the 1861 census but Barbara is not there () 2 more children Dora & Charles are there which confirms to me this is the correct family. Robert gives his place of birth as Fatfield, Co. Durham.

I am not concerned about the 1861 census or later but with the 1851 census and earlier.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Chris

I made a mistake in my original notes.

The 1871 census is the proven family not 1861 as I said above:

RG10/5128/7 p8
Burradon ,Earsdon
Northumberland
Robert Robson  Head 43      b Fatfield, Durham
Robert Robson    10
Dora Robson    9
Charles Earnest Robson    7

This family went to the USA shortly after this census.

Regards

Chris

the place of birth for Barbara in 1861 has been transcribed as Millington but looks to be Washington. Compare the enumerator's W at the start of the word with the one in Workington 2 lines down.

 ;)

I believe you are right.  When I originally looked at it I thought it said Malington hence me agreeing with the transcript  ;D

It's not the clearest writing, is it? Capital Ws are unusual.
