Free software to remove a stain
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 17:19 BST (UK) »
The bride dropped a piece of food, which stained her dress (of course before most of the photos!)
And the stain shows on many many of the photos!

People on this board have previously recommended Free Software to trick around with photos.

The bride is technically savvy, but hasn't done any photo-editing before, wants to remove the small stain from the photos herself, and doesn't intend to do any other editing ever (hence looking for something free)

I'm attaching a clip of the stained part of the dress ..

Hi Eadaoin - paint.net is a good free piece of kit but you need to be careful where you download it from as there are a lot of dodgy versions about.  C.net is a good site which I've found reliable so far,  and it has lots of free stuff to download.

The easiest way I can see to remove the stain is either to do a cut-and-paste with a little piece of material close to the stain so the stain is covered up.  Or alternatively a gaussian or fragment blur might do the trick.  There are some useful tutorial on YouTube, I believe, which could be of help.

Kind regards

An alternative to GIMP (which can do a lot!) is to try a simpler on-line photo-editor. I've found https://pixlr.com/editor/ to be one of the better ones. Just try it and see whether it does the trick. If not, use GIMP.
Two simple pixlr editor function that may be enough are:
- Local improvement tool (in photoshop: spot healing)
- Cloning from a non-stained area to the stained area

The advantages of on-line photo editing are (IMHO):
- there's no software to install - you just upload the photo
- the learning curve is relatively short because there's less to learn

Thank you, Mike, for that. (sorry for delayed reply - real life intervened for a couple of days!)

I've sent her a link to this thread, and she says "thank all your friends for their advice - I'll try a couple of their ideas and let you know"

When she sends me the corrected photos, I'll let you all know
