John Clarke and co went to Canada
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 23:07 BST (UK) »
I couldnt find my family in the 1911 and then discovered that they had gone to Canada in 1908.. Following the Father.

So what I have is this :

John Clarke born 1869 Nuneaton - warwickshire (from census)
his wife
Eliza Ellen Haywood  1876 Barwell Leics.

and their children

John H W known as Willie bn 1896 Hinckley
George 1899      Kirby Muxloe
Redvers Baden Clarke 1900  (this isnt as unusual a name as I had hoped??)   Kirby Muxloe

then it seems there is a daughter born around 1905  - I haven't found positive on this as yet.

Beatrice

she is on the Passenger list I found for them sailing out to Quebec  Snowflake Mountain  Manitoba...

the wife and children are going out in 1908 following the husband.

John snr was a Painter and paper hanger in the UK.

So what else could I possibly find and where can I look.

Haven't found the Husbands passenger list.. yet.

thanks

xin

1911 Census - 1424 Ross, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

John Clark  42
Eliza Clark 34
William Clark 15
George Clark 12
Redvers Clark 10
Beatrice Clark 6
Maria/Marian (hard to read) Clark  shown as born 1911.

Handwriting on original census page is atrocious but think it states John is a farmer.

1921 Census - Woodlands, Selkirk, Manitoba

John Clark  52   Farmer
Eliza E Clark  44
George Clark 22
Redvers B. Clark 20
Beatrice D. Clark 16

(the infant daughter in 1911 presumably died).

Listed as 'Clark' on both Canadian census'.

There is a Vital Statistics page for Manitoba for Births/Deaths/Marriages that are older than 100/70/80 years.

https://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

There is a marriage for a Beatrice Doris Clarke to a William Thomas Wakeford in Winnipeg on 21/04/1932. Could be one of yours.

Also Findagrave shows a gravestone in the Warren Municipal Cemetery located in Woodlands, Manitoba for John Clarke (1865-1925) and Eliza E. Clarke (1875-1950). Birth date is a few years out for John but I thought it might be a possibility.

Hi,

There is an obituary for Doris Wakeford in the Lethbridge Herald, May 7 1979, page 31.  It says that she died in Lethbridge on May 4 1979 at the age of 74.  Wife of William Wakeford of 836 13th Street South.   She was born July 25 1904 at Kirby Muxlowe, Leicestershire.  She came to Manitoba with her parents in 1908.  She married in 1932 and came to Calgary, then to Lethbridge in 1937.  She is survived by her husband.  She was predeceased by her parents and three brothers.

Found an obit in the Winnipeg Free Press for Redvers Baden Clarke...Wednesday, July 9, 1952 edition..

It says he was 51.  Address was 1321 Alexander Avenue.  He had lived in Canada for 47 years.  He was a Canadian Pacific Railway blacksmith.  He died in Winnipeg on "Wednesday" (the 9th was a Wednesday, so I assume he died on the 9th, but I suppose it could have been the previous Wed..the 2nd ???).  It says he was born in England and came to Canada in 1905. Survived by brother George and sister Mrs W T Wakeford.  Burial at Warren.  (fits with what Sami found for John and Eliza)

Found George's obit in the Lethbridge Herald, Aug 4, 1976 edition.

He died on Aug 3 1976.  He was 77 years of age.  Address had been 535 8th Street South.  He was born and raised in England and came to Winnipeg in 1908.  He moved to Lethbridge in 1965.  He served in WW1 with the 43rd Cameron Highlanders.  He is survived by sister Mrs Wm T Wakeford (Doris) of Lethbridge.  Predeceased by 2 brothers in Winnipeg.

There was also a 1916 Census for the Prairie Provinces. The family is listed in District No. 8 Portage La Prairie, Rosser Municipality:

John Clark 52 - Farmer
Eliza Clark 42
George Clark 17 - Column 2 indicates military service in Canada, Occupation - Laborer? on Farm
Doris Clark 12
Redvers Clark 15

Couldn't find William on this census and the infant daughter born in 1911 is not with the family either.
