Imprisonment of Robert dodd

Hi I'm looking for information on Robert dodd. B. Lancashire 1848. Father Richard. Mother ann. Wife Sarah dodd nee varey  I have found him in 1861/1871 census. Missing in 1881. But wife there. Says married. In nov 28th 1878 a Robert dodd same age area was imprisoned. Is that why he's not on 1881 census.? I Can't find anything else. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Rob

Blackburn Standard 23 Nov 1928 has  an account of a murderous assault on his wife Sarah at 89 Larkhill, she survived .Robert Dodd, hawker aged 30.
Couple of similar accounts in papers but I can t find anything about sentencing as yet.

Robert was born Lancashire 1848 .

Robert married Sarah Varey in 1867 in Ulverston
there is a Robert Dodd b 1848 Ulverston - so I presume this is your Robert
born april / may / june 1848 ...
three Robert Dodd b 1848 in Lancashire = 2 in Liverpool and 1 in Ulverston
Ulverston is now in Cumbria

It is the Cumbria (Dalston) one Garstonite with children Richard & Christiana.

just found Sarah with children with her mum in Larkshill Street Blackburn on 1881 census
Ann Varey aged 62 b Pencloth ,Cumbria
Sarah Dodd aged 33 b Aside ,Lancs
Richard aged 13 b Farnworth,Lanc
Christiana aged 11 b Suton ,Lancs
Margaret aged 10 b Burnley,Lancs
Nancy aged 4 b Ulverston ,Lancs
Mary aged 2 b Ulverston

note Margaret 10 - next is Nancy aged 4 - a SIX year gap - and Sarah is back in Ulverston where she married ...was Robert in jail for part of that 6 year period ?

According to FindMyPast he was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude 28 Nov 1878

Blackburn Standard, 30 Nov 1878 reported he was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude.

Yes 5 years penal servitude in 1878 for unlawfully wounding his wife Sara.
