Where do I look for naturalization papers ?
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 12:33 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys...

I have a family , Isaac and Betsy Berinstein/Bernstein (and variations thereof ! ) Their first child was born in England 1886, I cannot find a marriage for them here.

They were both born c1863, and Betsy states Kishinev, Russia as place of birth

Where do I look for further information please. Natralization would put flesh on the bones to start.

Thank You

JeannieR

Naturalisation was expensive and many people did not bother with it. There were only really benefits if you were a landowner or wanted to vote (which required a certain financial status in the 1880s/1890s anyway). Their children, if all were born in England, would not have needed to naturalise.

I'm making a presumption based on the name, but you may be able to find them in Jewish records of Kishinev, there are some (images, not searchable databases) online:

Russian born people needed alien registration documents in WW1
These are available at records offices for their region .

My great grandfather had a simple one in 1914 but because he was a travelying salesman and had trouble proving his nationality at 1 police station he got 1 with his photo. town of origin and every change of address .

Hi Jeannie,

Can you confirm the couple's first names and that they were located in England as I can't see a couple that fits the description in that country? However I can see  a couple in NY that fits a lot of the criteria, except that they were married abt 1891 ..
(could it be Louis + Betsy instead ? ? ?)

Thank You all,

For your advice on this, unfortunately, been having problems with my computer, and not been able to get on with it!

Been having problems with the brain too. Yes Treespirit. It was Louis and Betsy Behrenstein/ Bernstein I was chasing, not Isaac. Dwelling in Leeds,1891/1901/ 1911.

I believe Betsy's maiden name to be either Copalanski, which was the name given by her 16 year old sister, in 1891 or Grosman.

I have just been able to confirm, that Louis had a brother, Nathan born c 1870, also born Mariampol, Russia, now Lithuania. I believe their father to have been Zvi Hirsch, this is on Nathan's headstone , in Hebrew,  at New Farnley Jewish Cemetery Leeds,1965 .

Louis died 31/05/1938,and is probably buried at Salford, where is eldest daughter lived. In 1939,living  at 187, Bury Road, Manchester. I can find no access to online burial records

Again, Any help welcomed
