Lannens of Leitrim
« on: Monday 18 June 18 10:09 BST (UK) »
My ggg-grandfather Cornelius Lannen (Lannan, Lannon), born in 1840 or 1841 has long been the dead end in my family tree. His US Civil War induction papers list Leitrim as his place of birth, and there are 2 Petty Sessions records of a Cornelius Lannen in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim in 1855. Hopefully the same individual and not a doppelganger. He emmigrated to the US no later than 1859 and was married with a newborn child in Lexington, KY in 1860. Wife, Bridget Murphy  (1840-1881).

If anyone has more information, or some tips, I would love to hear it and I would be glad share what I have about the Lannen/Lannan Family in America.

Not too many on 1901 Census...  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01m84/

No, there wouldn't be. In the Griffin's Land Valuation (1847-1860s) there were upwards of a thousand hits for Lannan/Lannon/Lannen across Ireland, mainly in counties Wexford, Waterford, Galway, and Leitrim. Leitrim was hit very hard during the Famine years, and most people who survived left for bigger towns, the United States, Canada, or Australia. I've been told that you're more likely to meet people who's family hails from Leitrim outside of Ireland than inside. By 1901 the nation was bouncing back from the potato blight and people from other counties were moving back into the farm lands of Leitrim.

Hi,
I think I have found the marriage.....I searched with just Cornelius and Bridget, took a while then saw this record.
December 1859 Fayette Kentucky.
The record reads.....Lavin but when you see the actual document is Lannin.
Is this place in the same area as Lexington?

Yes, Maggsie. He married Bridget in Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky. They had a son in 1860 and moved to Portland in Louisville, KY, where my family still lives today. I have lots of reliable records of the family in the US, but my records of these two immigrant teenagers in Ireland is a bit nebulous, to say the least.
I would love to run into someone on a forum like this who can help me connect my Cornelius and Bridget with already researched families in Ireland!

Well you have, from Census, a 70 y.o. one in Kiltoghert Parish.

Have you looked through Kiltoghert Parish registers??
