Irish Potato Famine Research
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 13:07 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about the research done by the Irish Famine Eviction Project https://irishfamineeviction.com ?

It sounds like a worthy research project.

I was hoping to find out the origins of my gtx2 grandfather's family from the north of Ireland c1840. John Williamson settled in Scotland around that time.

I dont know about the worthy project, but offer the following
there are several hundred Williamson in the times the of the best known famine ie1846-1851 the website www.familysearch.org has a record of those leaving Ireland crossing the Atlantic ocean at that time.  those travelling to Scotland are not registered that way or any way.

Looking at John Williamson b Ireland in the Scottish Census 3 born Ireland in 1841, 15 born Ireland 1851, 9 in 1861 census.  Have you identified him in these census. his wifes maiden name might be important if known and family children listed as born in ireland

Searching for John Williamson b Ireland if he arrived in Scotland at an age, that would relate to him being born before 1816-1821 He himself might be listed in Irish Tithes Applotment books 1823-1837.his minimum status for himself or father to be having homestead house valued at 5 shillings pa to be included.   Otherwise if you cant connect to a parish and then church record you are almost out of luck.

If you have a definite early ID in Scotltand please help us by telling us.

Irish Tithes Applotment books 1823-1837
website for 26 counties  gives 8 results http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

Oh thank you so much for the trouble you have taken.

On John Williamson's  (Roman Catholic) marriage certificate to my gtx2 grandmother Jane Marshall, in 1855 he is stated as widower with 2 male children born in The North of Ireland. His father's name is John Williamson and his mother Helen McConville, both deceased.

On the 1851 census there is a married JW living with wife Margaret and 2 boys David and John. They are at Twynholm, Dumfries and Galloway, at a barn and are vagrants. I assumed they might be the missing family but no other facts do I have.

The Williamson name has been handed down as a middle name to some other members of my family.

Your extra information gave me a chance to compare townlands with the the two last names each represented.   This narrows the finding focus enormously. It can be a clue if they came from the same townland, in practice I have found this connection works best in same civil parish That’s too many for me to work out for yopu..  The Counties have reduced from 9 to 2 . Its all based in Tithes again
Williamson, John          Townland : Aghantaraghan Year : 1830 Ballymore Armagh
McConville, Daniel       Townland : Aghantaraghan Year : 1830    Ballymore
McConville, Patrick       Townland : Aghantaraghan Year : 1830   Ballymore

Williamson, John          Townland : Blockery Year : 1828 Drumcree Armagh
McConville, David       Townland : Cushenagh Year : 1828 Drumcree Armagh
Williamson, John          Townland: Drummond Year: 1834 Kilclooney Armagh
Williamson, John          Townland: Mullochglass Year: 1835 Killevy Armagh
McConville, Bernard       Townland: Mullochglass Year: 1835 Killevy

Williamson, John          Townland: Mullochglass Year: 1835 Killyman Armagh McConville, Bernard       Townland: Mullochglass Year: 1835 Killyman

Williamson, John        Townland: Loughadian Year: 1828   Aghaderg Down
McConville, Geo.       Townland: Loughadian Year: 1828   AghadergDown

Once again you have obviously worked hard for me using the information you were given.

I must confess that I'd made a mistake concerning the name of John Williamson's mother. Her name was written on his marriage certificate as McColville and not McConville but are the names interchangeable?

I do apologise.

Judy, so few that I only found 3 entries to my complete surprise, the mathematical reduction of finding neighbours as people didn’t travel that far in those days is reasonable. You have an advantage in one of the names is scarce.  However the source is flawed with known errors , nevertheless here is the first, and my my favourite
McColvill, Robt.-Townland: Belaughey  Rasharkin Antrim Year: 1834- Belaughey appears to be a variant name for Bellaghy - Antrim which is around the fork where Killagan Road forks off the Bellaghy road with the village Cloughmills further east . who has a neighbour
s bordered on the north by  Finvoy civil parish
ie Williamson, John Townland : Drumlee Year: 1834  Finvoy Antrim Drumlee is a horizontal sliver with ite most easterly point not far from the current B16 road which stops at the village of Dunloy the distance is about 5 miles apart If this is the right area for parents then they might have met at a church between eg Dunloy or Rasharkin itself
Do you know their religion?
CHURCH RECORDS
trying https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/proni-guide-church-records
I am leaving out microfiche etc references..  Some of the same records are probably available on www.familysearch.org records [Mormon Church of latter day saints etc] which gives

Rasharkin parish is in the Roman Catholic parish of Dunloy and Cloughmills – see under FINVOY]
Baptisms and marriages, 1848-81.

moving to Co Armagh
McColville, John-Townland: Lurgantarry Year: 1833-Shankill-Armagh
McColville, John-Townland: Lurgantarry Year: 1833-Shankill-Down  McConville is listed under http://www.lurganancestry.com/  Ann McConville is living in Lurgantarry map ref 5 in Griffiths valuation 1864 You could follow that to see who takes over her property later see PRONI valuation continuation books. But that reversion spelling puts me right off this

You mentioned similarities to McConville well I checked with the expert John Grenham
https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=McColville
do see all the variant names he lists. he doesn’t show McConville connection at all. [I only tried 3 McColvil, McColvill, McColville]
So if you end up brickwalled i would try bmds via PRONI or Familysearch as above
I dont think I can help further
lots of irish luck

Thank you once again.

I must admit that I do not understand completely the information you have provided although I do appreciate your travails.

Townlands = ? Small area of land where families existed side by side?

John Williamson was married to my gtx2 grandmother in a Roman Catholic service. Some of their children were baptised into the RC faith, though not all, at St. Josephs RC Church, Stranraer. My great grandmother was one who was not.

Their children do seem to follow the Scottish naming pattern though I don't know where some of the names have come from: John, Jane, Alexander, Robert, Francis, Mary.

If anything further occurs to you I'd love to hear your views and thank you once again.
