John Newman
« on: Friday 22 June 18 06:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace a John Newman who was born c1800 in Lynn, Norfolk.

He was a Master Mariner and ended up living in Durham and marrying a Mary Routledge in 1827 in Bishopwearmouth, Durham.

He died in 1853 in Durham and was according to his obituary Captain of The Chieftain.

I would love to know more about him.

Many thanks

He died in 1853 in Durham

I cannot find a death registration for  a John Newman, 1853 in the Durham area.

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 11 July 1853
Wisby** - Jun 28: put in - The Chieftain, Newman, from Cronstadt for London with master sick (since dead), and will proceed under charge of the mate.

** - I think Wisby is Visby, Sweden?

Thanks :)

That is so helpful - the obituary had Wisby and was the Durham newspaper so I thought that was where he had died.  Never thought that it was overseas.

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 28 June 1853

ST PETERSBURG
Sailed [Jun18]

Chieftain, Newman, for Elsinore, for orders

Sailing St Petersburg to Elsinore, Denmark, Visby would be en route.
Checked FindMyPast's "Overseas deaths" but John not listed.

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 12 August 1853 -

"Sunderland: August 10
Died of cholera, after a short illness, on the 28th June, at Wisby, in Gothland, having put in there on his passage from Cronstadt, Captain John Newman, of Sunderland, aged 50, master of the brig Chieftan, of Hartlepool."

Also, Ancestry has John's Masters & Mates certificate, on which he states his date of birth, 22 July 1800 at Lynne Regis.
