John Piper
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 00:53 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am having trouble finding birth and/or baptism info for John Piper, supposedly born c 1829/30 in Playden, Rye, Sussex.  I am sure it is the same John Piper who married Charlotte Cooper in Chatham, Kent in 1859.  He and Charlotte, with 5 children emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Familysearch.org has the shipping record of the family's arrival in New Zealand per 'Hudson' into Hawkes Bay in 1875.

There are seven children all of whose birth can be found on freeBMD.

Emily Jane , aged 19 on the record, was born in 1858, before the marriage of John PIPER and Charlotte COOPER and so her birth will be found in the name COOPER.
(March 1/4 Reg 2a/550 at Blean)

The 1851 census finds one John PIPER as a marine at the Barracks in Chatham Kent. Born Playden, Sussex.

Is this the only source of your belief that your man was born at that location?

Information from the 1861 census has a couple PIPER with their 2 children, Emily aged 3 years and Ann aged 7 months. Both born Kent St Stephens  (Blean?)

The name given for head of household is Frank PIPER.  He was born in Rainford, Kent and is aged 36 (according to transcript, but could be 30 looking at original) He is an ag lab.

Charlotte PIPER born Kent, St Stephens in aged 22.

This is a possibility for the christening of John PIPER

Name John PIPER
Christening
Date     23 Nov 1828
At  Iden, Sussex, England
Father's Name   William PIPER
Mother's Name  Sarah PIPER

Iden is within a couple of kilometers of Playden, Sussex, I think.

There were possibly other children to this couple, including one Ellen.

Thank you, Sue.  I had found William and Sarah, but it was not the right parents.  My apologies, I am new to this, but on John's death certificate here in NZ it states his mother's name was Hannah.  I did find a William Piper and Hannah Pain, but nothing to prove they were his parents, so was looking for a baptism or birth notice.  As to the 'Frank' in the 1861 UK census, pretty sure this is an error and that it should have read 'John'. I have the shipping record and once again my apologies for not mentioning more detail on my initial request for help.

That's all right, Leigh.
The point in my mentioning the shipping record is that you have stated 5 children.
The number is seven.

Easy to do.  I was hoping it was Chatham and that the marriage was on City Ark in case more details were on the record
