William Ryder Plymouth circa wartime
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 05:50 BST (UK) »
Hi. My father states that his grandfather was Irish, but we have no evidence of this and I would like to trace the family line just to know (especially as he raised us insisting we were Irish!). My (apparently) Irish Great grandfather had a son called william ryder, married to Violet May Ryder, both in Plymouth. My great grandfather was also called William, I think. I don't know my great-grandmother's name.
This has been a mystery for years, and I would love to know my true heritage. If you can offer any information, I'd be very grateful x

Welcome to rootschat, Bee

Have you applied for William and Violet's marriage certificate to ensure accurate information?

Do you know if this is William J Ryder's death, as you can then look for him in 1911 if is it him?

William James Ryder
Died age 76 in April quarter 1987 in Plymouth
Born 17 May 1910

There are other William (J) Ryder's in the same area, and this family does not seem to be Irish on a quick census search, so you need some dates.

Hiya :) thanks for replying. I am pretty certain that was his year of death, as I vaguely remember attending the funeral as a very small child around that time. I hadn't thought of the marriage certificate, but I'm not certain they were married in Plymouth x

You need to check your father's birth for his mother's maiden name, which should be Beaumont if that is the correct marriage.

Ah, then it definitely is :) But it's his (William Ryder's) father I'm struggling to trace. :/ x

If it is the correct marriage then this is likely to be them:

Birth

RYDER, WILLIAM  JAMES
Mother's maiden surname: HUGGINS
GRO Reference: 1910  J Quarter in PLYMOUTH  Volume 05B  Page 250

Marriage

September quarter 1908

HUGGINS,    Daisey/Daisy Annie
RYDER    William James
Plymouth    5b   562

1911 census

William is a stoker in the Royal Navy and both he and Daisy were born in Devon.

You really need to research in the traditional way by working back through the generations by using supporting documentation.  William and Violet's marriage certificate should give both father's names and occupations.
