Uniform help please
« on: Tuesday 26 June 18 13:39 BST (UK) »
According to his 1918 Silver War Badge listing, John William Ashton enlisted with the Leicestershire Regiment on 31 Aug 1914. The child in the photo was born mid-1913, so I'm thinking the photo was taken early(ish) in John's service.

I'm slightly puzzled by his tunic and belt - because they're not the standard khaki issue.

I know that early volunteers were issued with any random uniform that vaguely fit and were in stock in the Regimental stores, and I wondered if that accounts for John's uniform.  Or, perhaps, there is another significance that I'm missing.

Can anyone help, please?
Thanks

As you say not the 1908 pattern tunic associated with WW1 soldiers. This looks like "walking out kit" which (as far as I'm aware) was only issued to NCO's.
Possibly a bandsman but I'm not seeing anything else that might indicate this.

I wondered about a bandsman, but all I've got from the family is that they think he was a coal miner before he joined up.

We can't see his right hand, but if you're able to zoom in I think his left sleeve looks very long and seems to come a long way down his hand and there's some sort of white mark/er on that sleeve.

It's a puzzle, isn't it?

Most collieries had bands. The marking on his sleeve is braiding.
Another explanation is that he was a pre-war Territorial.

OK a close look at his shoulder title indicates a "T" above so TF. Possibly embodied at the outbreak of war.

From the Medal Card/Rolls/SWB listing he seems to have been in the 7th, 6th and 3rd Bns, but his date of entering France matches that of the 6th.

He wouldn't necessarily gone overseas at the same time as his Battalion, he may have gone later as a replacement.

Some misinformation in the posts above.  He is a Regular soldier in the Leicestershire regiment wearing number 1 dress which was withdrawn in 1914.  The cap was worn 1906 onwards.

He is not a bandsman.

He is not a territorial as their cap badge was different and worn without the top scroll before 1916.

The tunic may have been borrowed for the photo as its a bad fit.
