The Druid Arms Inn, Dean St. & The Old England Inn, Lon Pobdy, Bangor
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 07:17 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any pictures or information about the Druid in Bangor? All I know is that it's under the present car park now. My 2nd g uncle, Thomas David Edwards was the publican in 1901 with his wife Laura Templeton. Her mother, Sefralah Hughes (nee Templeton-Morris) ran the Old England in Lon Pobdy in 1891. I've no idea where this pub was situated but I know where the road is.

Thanks,
Dee

One of my ancestors used to live there but, as you say, not many buildings remaining.

You can see the location of the Druid Arms on this map - https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/258362/372286/13/100227

It should be in the middle but the text is small and you may need to zoom out a couple of times. You can order a full-size map.

I took the attached picture in 2001 and the building may still be there.

The pub sign you see in the photo is the present County Arms and if I remember correctly the Druid was next door to the right

Many thanks. It was one of Bangor's smallest pubs so the building to the right fits the description.

This post was started a while ago but I need to update it. There are a number of maps available now that were not at the time of this post. I now find the Druid Arms was a lot nearer the High Street.

The Old England in Lon Pobty has been a car park for as long as I can remember and is about to have flats built on it.

Many thanks for the maps.
As you can see the chapel was sandwiched between The Plough and The Old England. Complaints of rowdiness and domestic rows between the licencees of the Old England: Mrs Sifaralah Hughes and her husband appeared in the press. They were alleged to allow drinking on the Sabbath and caused ‘drunks’ to disturb a ‘smoking concert’ nearby (Caernarvon & Denbigh Herald, Oct. 2nd 1891). Pressured by increasing urbanisation, Nonconformity and a failure to manage the pub, it’s not surprising the Petty Sessions of October 1891 refused to renew its licence. The Old England did not appear in subsequent decennial censuses. The Plough was demolished to make the Caellepa Road at the junction with Lôn Pobty.
Residential accretion around Lôn Pobty were partly responsible for the demise of both its taverns and a form of ‘gentrification’ saw Ebenezer Chapel renamed Park Hill as well as Lôn Pobty itself between the 1871 – ’91 censuses.

I don't think there was a Druid Arms in the 1960s.  I recall the County, but, also on Dean Street, was the Three Crowns, which lay closer to the High Street on the opposite side.  It was popular with the students, having a television and offering draught cider at an attractive price.
