Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire in the 1870's
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 09:05 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather and several other members of the family were born, married and died in Gilmour's Close, Sanquhar. I have visited Sanquhar on several occasions and trawled the internet but I cannot find Gilmour's Close anywhere.
Anyone have any idea?
Many thanks.

You may already have looked here:

Typically a "close" is a road with houses & no exit. I can only see one at the back of the High St.
You could find them on the census & follow the enumerator's route which is at the start of the book & match that to the map.

On Find My Past, addresses come up as Gilmour's Close, High Street, so guessing it is a close off the high street, only found it in 1871 census.

A couple of the families living on Gilmour's Close in 1871 by 1881 they were living on back lane/close, high street, I wonder if its name was changed.

Thanks to all - I know there are a few locations there which have changed names over time and I have no doubt Gilmour's Close is one of them
There are still a few 'Closes' in Sanquhar, a couple of which are names and another couple which aren't named and I always thought it would be one of those.
Thanks also for the map Jim1 and the advice.

I thought it was this one as it's the only one that looks like a close.....then I spotted the other one.
