1st Battalian Northumberland Fusiliers
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 11:13 BST (UK) »
I have a death certificate for a James Herbert Piper who died in 1930 age 40 at the Infantry barracks in York.
I have his medal card which gives this information, I know it is his as it confirms his death date.
T/26498 -Driver - Army Service Corps
42829 -Driver - Worcestershire Regiment
5239968- Driver Northumberland Fusiliers

Is there anywhere other than applying for his records from the MOD (presuming they have them as he died 1930)  that I may obtain a date and place of birth for him

Thank you,

Rosie

The MOD hold records for all those serving after 1920; that is probably the way to go.

Did he leave a Will?  That might hold some clues.   :-\

Thanks for your reply nanny jan.

I can't see that he left a will.  As I don't know who this man is I was reluctant to fork out the £30 though I have printed the forms out ready.  I don't really want his Army records I just want confirmation of his identity, the death certificate is no good as it is the Coroner who was the informant.

There are newspaper reports of his death but they call him Thomas Herbert Piper  ::)

A long shot.....do you know where he was buried and if there is a gravestone?  That might give a birthdate.......or might not!

I have no idea where he was buried / cremated I have not found anything obvious online.

Thanks for the 'nudge' in that direction I will start by emailing York Crem.  I can live in hope that a member of his family appears on the records which may help establish his identity.

Thank you.  The crem email bounced but I have now tried the cemetery.   ;D  If I knew where his family were located I could try there too   ::)

Presumably if he was in the Army Service Corps he could have been an Army Reservist prior to that.  :-\  I probably need to do some research on the regiments he was likely to have been in during WW1

He is not buried in York or Fulford Cemeteries and the Crem was not open then  :(
