Craftwest and EVA - Mean anything to anyone?
« on: Tuesday 09 August 05 01:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a GGGGgrandfather Hugh Eva born approx 1805 apparently in Craftwest Cornwall.

Can anyone tell me where Craftwest is and does the name Hugh Eva mean anything to anyone?  I know he married a Sarah from Beer Alston, Devon moved to that area and had children Amelia, William,  Daniel and Sarah in the 1830's -40's.

I am trying to get further back, so any information would be extremely helpful

Thank you
Jackie

Am I right in thinking that you got "Craftwest" from a transcription of the 1851 census for Devon?

If this is the case you could put a post on Devon board asking if someone could have a look at the original image from the 1851 census (it probably isn't "Craftwest" at all!

Allan

Many thanks both of you.

Eva does seem to crop up rather a lot in the Cornwall area - well more than any other place which isnt alot. I will keep a note of those you have found in case they come into the picture later.

Good idea to post on Devon board I am beginning to come to the same conclusion about the transcription as noone else has posted saying that they know the place in Cornwall.

Thanks very much for your help.

IGI shows 2 christenings for Hugh Eva - one in 1805 - Christmas Day! -  father William, mother Ann - at Kenwyn but presumably misspelt as "Eua".
The other, in 1807 is for a Hugh who died age 6 months. 8)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thank you both Hackstaple and Ian. You have given me the next generation back!! This has certainly helped alot.  Ian do you mind me asking where you found the details with regard to the info on William and Ann?  Yes it is correct that Hugh was a lead miner in the area, so this does look like the right group.  I would love to try and find out more details with regard to the family.

Many thanks for your assistance.
Best wishes
