Buying yourself out

Was there a sliding scale of charges for this, please?  Am interested in the early 1880s.

Say someone signed up for 6 years and the half-way through year 3, he wanted out.  Would it have cost him more or less than if he wanted to get out sooner/later? If you see what I mean!

In 1898 my grandpa bought himself out for £10......he'd been in the Army for 10 days!
