BIRD, William, Chatham
« on: Sunday 01 July 18 05:45 BST (UK) »
I had previously posted a message for William Bird being born in :) Clapham but have recently discovered that he may have been born in Chatham, Kent. His father was also William Bird and he married Anne Brookes. William Bird, my great Grandfather, was born approximately 1829 and came to Australia in his 20's. He was a seaman as was his father. He married Margaret Ryan in Melbourne in 1857.
I would like to know more information about his family in Chatham if possible.

Have you found him in 1841 census?

For Ref: this is the previous post, 2009

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=345366.0

1841 Census referred to in the 2009 post is this one:
Windlesham, Surrey
HO107: Piece 1080 / Bk 5 / Folio 25 / pg 11
Ann BIRD 55, Washerwoman - N
Thomas BIRD 20, Farmer - N
John BIRD 15, Farmer - N
William BIRD 12 - Y

Do you still hold that is him?   If so, do you have any other, independant knowledge that he had brothers named Thomas & John?

The 2009 post has a dOb for him: born 25/2/1829 in Clapham
What is the source of this?

His death 1875. There are two registered in Victoria that name.
The one with parents' names had a wife named Jessie McDonald I think. So your man :  is it the one registered 1875, no parents names on index, and stated age 49 (born abt 1826)?

What is your source for his parents names?  A responder on the 2009 post did ask what info is on his Australia Marriage & Death records, but can't see any reply.

Cheers

If it is the Windlesham family then Ann is noted as born 'Upton Oval, Somerset' and a Widow in 1851 census.

A tree on Ancestry has a different William Bird marrying Margaret Ryan - tree probably wrong, just wondered what was your source for your William marrying her?

The index also identifies his wife as Maragret RYAN and birthplace as Surrey.

Thank you Dundee, Chempat, Ambly, Rosie99.
After doing some more searching, most likely it's Windlesham where they were living in the 1841 census. I got the town Chatham and also Clapham from death certificates but this may have been a confusion on the part of the informants for the town of Chobham in Surrey which is near Windlesham in Surrey.
My gt grandfather, William Bird was married to Margaret Ryan in Melbourne in 1857 and his parent's names were on his marriage certificate. He died in Stawell, Victoria, Australia, in 1875 after living in Landsborough (goldfields), near Stawell.
Not sure if this is the correct way to reply, but I do appreciate all your assistance.

William's place of birth will be on his marriage certificate, given by himself, not someone else.  How is it recorded on that certificate?
