Searching for John THOMAS b. 1872 mother Mary Ann THOMAS
« on: Sunday 01 July 18 18:01 BST (UK) »
John Thomas was my Great Grandfather. He was born in the Union Workhouse, Llanwnog, Montgomeryshire 5 Jun 1872. His mother was Mary Ann THOMAS b. c. 1856, but there are three possibles in that area. His father was registered as John THOMAS, a shoemaker when he married.
John THOMAS b. 1872 married my great grandmother Mary Elizabeth CLARKE on 21 April 1900 at Llanwrthwl, Brecon where he is shown as Widower. I was told by the archivist that the workhouse records are virtually non-existent, so if anyone has more information, I would be grateful.

Welcome to Rootschat

It was fairly common practice for illegitimate children to make up a fathers name when they married to make them appear "respectable"

Does your great grandfathers 1872 birth cert only show his mothers name?

His father's entry is blank on the birth certificate. I have contacted the Montgomery archive, but the records for the workhouse do not cover the required dates.

Newtown was the registration district for Llanwnog and there are 3 x Mary Ann Thomas marriages in that RD between 1874-1876

Unfortunately - without further information about her it would be impossible to say which (if any) was the mother of John

What dates do they cover?

Yes that's them. It doesn't help that John THOMAS b. 1872 was also an engineer and traveled around for work.

1911 census. He met his wife while he and her father were working on one of the big Welsh reservoirs in Brecon.
