Allbone, Halberd, Arbor and Alban - the same?
« on: Monday 02 July 18 09:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the birthplace of Elizabeth Halberd who married Uriah Johnson in 1815 at St Mary's Bedford .

According to the 1851 Biddenham census Elizabeth was born in Biggleswade. I can't find such a surname but lots of Allbones so could she be the Elizabeth Allbone baptised December 1786 daughter of Joseph and Ann?

Uriah and Elizabeth named a son Edward Arbor, and their daughter Rhoda named a daughter Elizabeth Alban* which makes me think that Halberd, Arbor and Alban were all interpretations of Allbone.

Seeing the OPRs would perhaps clear this up but until I can do this myself I would appreciate a bit of local knowledge please.

Kind regards, Michael.

*David highlighted Alban back in 2007.

The Beds FHS Surnames Index CD has Elizabeth's name as HALBERD for that St.Marys marriage on 19 Jan 1815, which is what FamilySearch also has it as. However that's the only Halberd name & there is no Halbern name in Bedfordshire, so suggesting it may be incorrect.

Thanks both for your interest. I do apologize but I used incorrect spelling; I had Halberd in my records and so have amended my post.  Particularly ironic given that was the issue I was highlighting! >:(

I pose still the possibility that the subsequent spellings in the family - and the Biggleswade birthplace perhaps indicate a connection?

Kind regards, Michael.

Is the Edward Arbor Johnson baptised Biddenham in 1820 the same Edward Albone Johnson who married Sarah Sugars at Bedford St.Pauls on 29 Oct 1849, his father Uryah Johnson, labourer of Beachamp Row.

Elizabeth Johnson buried Biddenham on 9th April 1855 age 66

John,
Is the Edward Arbor Johnson baptised Biddenham in 1820 the same Edward Albone Johnson who married Sarah Sugars at Bedford St.Pauls on 29 Oct 1849, his father Uryah Johnson?

Yes, I am sure it is. :) The only other local Uriah Johnson I am aware of is his nephew (born in 1830) and also of Biddenham.

In addition I see that Edward appears in the 1851 census with the surname Albone - no mention of Johnson, nothwithstanding the fact that one of his brothers is living next door. In the succeeding 3 censuses Edward reverts to the surname Johnson.

Trish,
Christenings;
ELIZ Allbone 19 Nov 1786 to Wm/Eliz
ELIZ Allbone 24 Dec 1786 to Jos/Ann
ELIZ Albone  13 Jun 1794 to Jas/Sarah, born 11 April 1792

FamilySearch has a claimed tree for Elizabeth bap Wm/Eliz but the other two may be contenders for my elusive Elizabeth? It was a visit her grave at Biddenham last week that reminded me of unfinished business!
