Help! Want to find out more about my granddad - where do I start?
« on: Tuesday 03 July 18 13:43 BST (UK) »
Hello! I need assistance please. My granddad served in the Middx Regiment during WWII- all i know is this, he drove a Bren Gun Carrier, Landed on D-Day (i'm thinking SWORD) and when i was 10, he handed me a bag from a blown up bank in France or Germany with the money and medals (including an iron cross and Afrika Korps), of a German Officer. I keep them safe to this day. I really want to find out more, who do i contact? Thank you! I'm the only person in the family to care enuff to find out!

Hello Proud

Welcome to Rootschat

Do you know your Grandfather's date of birth?  You can write to ask for his service papers which will cost £30.

Here is a link to tell you how to do this:-

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records

Read all the relevant sections and you can then apply for his service records.  Hopefully you will have enough to apply.

I assume he is deceased?  If so you will need to send his death certificate with the application forms along with the payment required.

If you get stuck, do ask again, there are lots of knowledgeable people on here who can help.

Welcome to rootschat 1proud...etc. :)

Is it his army service you are looking to find out more about or as much as you can about his life?

You could apply for his service records.
If you give us his name and date and place of birth we may be able to point you in the right direction to find him on the 1939 register and perhaps censuses.
Do you know his parent's names? Siblings?
The more you can tell us the more we should be able to assist you.  :)

Added: Snap GG.  :)
