Barbara Sparkes widow in 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 04 July 18 15:42 BST (UK) »
I have found Barbara Sparkes widow living with her son Lewis Christopher Sparkes at 12 St John's Hill Reading in 1891 and again with Lewis at 24 Tilehurst Road, Reading in 1911.  Barbara was born in Bray in circa 1827 and died Q2 1918.

I can't find either Barbara or Lewis in the 1901 census and would appreciate any help for that year.

Thanks Trish.

Barbara was my uncle's grandmother and I have been researching him as he was wounded in WW1 at Gallippoli, returned to duty with the Berkshire Yeomanry in Egypt and was torpedoed twice spending eight and sixteen hours in the water until rescued.  He was an officer's batman at one time and went out under fire to rescue him as he was wounded but he sadly succumbed to his injuries. Latterly he worked as an ordnance examiner at a large arsenal depot and checked everything from pencil bombs up to sixteen inch WW1 naval shells and propellant charges.  Unfortunately his only son didn't have children so I'm just recording what I can about him as an appendix to my family records, he was married to my father's eldest sister and the nicest guy you could wish to meet.

Unfortunately his service records appear to be amongst those lost during WW2; I have found his admittance and discharge records fro Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital at Millbank and the record for him on the War Office Casualty List.

Thank you for that info. Such a sad story and I can see why you are interested in him.
