Re: 99th Regiment of Foot

Hi, first time using this site and not sure if I add my question here as I can't figure out how to start a new thread... Wondering if anyone has any information regarding non convict passenger lists for the period 1842 to 1843 when the 99th Regiment of Foot escorted convicts?

I recently found the British Military records for my ancestor James Gibson who was a Sgt in the 99th. He served 11 years in Mauritius and 3 years in NSW. His death certificate states he was also in NZ for 5 years but informants often get things wrong.  I am hoping to find among the passenger lists the records for his wife Margaret and children who sailed sometime after June 1842 and were settled in NSW by end of 1843. That do not appear to be on any passenger lists so I am now presuming they sailed on the convict ship. Surely there must be records somewhere to say what ship took them where?

I also enjoyed learning from the post above that dressed to the 9s comes from the 99th. My father was always a smart dresser, obviously am instilled gene still doing its bit.

Here are some mentions on trove of ship arrivals with women and children associated with the 99th Regiment (by number) arriving in Australia in 1842.   It may help to narrow down the ships to be searched.

A brief paragraph reads:

Wiltshire Regiment (Lanarkshire) First Detachment 99th Regiment of Foot came to Australia as a guard on the convict ship "North Briton" which was bringing convicts out to Tasmania in 1842. Second Detachment 99th Foot Regiment came to Australia as a guard on the convict ship "John Renwick" which was bringing convicts out to Tasmania in 1842.Third Detachment 99th Foot Regiment came to Australia as a guard on the convict ship "Kandahar" which was bringing convicts out to Tasmania in 1842. After serving sometime in the Parramatta area and also Port Phillip, they were sent to New Zealand to engage the Maoris. 1842 saw the 99th Regiment leave Chatham for Tasmania and arrived in Sydney 1843. The 99th was a very unpopular Regiment with the 11th Regiment being bought to Sydney to control the 99th. 1848 The 99th was stationed in Hobart and left Australia in 1856. Stationed at Hobart, Sydney, Norfolk Island, Victoria, Moreton Bay.

It is possible that if your chap was rank and file that you may not find a non convict passenger list giving the full details for the arrival of his family.  It is possible that they actually came on same ship as he did, as each tour provided a number of places for families of rank and file.   The transport ships arrived in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) and are named in that paragraph.

On Sunday the 1st June the barque British Sovereign arrived at Auckland, from Sydney, with the headquarters of the 99th Regiment ... and 200 rank and file.

THE ARMY
99th Regiment
"On 14th inst a convict guard of the Regiment will leave this garrison for Deptford where it will board the transport ship Duchess of Northumberland, and proceed with convicts for Van Diemen's Land.  The strength of the guard will consist of two sarjeants, and 27 rank and file under the command of Captain O'Connel.  On the following day the headquarters of this regiment, with their band and drums made up with 50 rank and file, with four sarjeants and 10 women, will leave Chatham garrison as a convict guard for Van Diemen's Land.  The headquarters will embark at Deptford on board the convict ship, Earl Grey."
