Bryn Glas Bach, Llandwrog - Strangers, lodgers, hopefully Family!
« on: Saturday 07 July 18 17:09 BST (UK) »
There are two houses logged as Bryn Glas Bach in Llandwrog. A third is the main, presumably bigger, "Bryn Glas" house (Given that bach means little in Welsh).

On 24th June 1877 Ellen Williams was born to Robert and Jane Williams, the birth certificate and baptism record confirms the location as Bryn Glas Bach.

There are two families associated with both properties between 1876 and 1881 (as proved by the 1871, 1881 census and another baptism record:

  • William and Jane Roberts (who appear to live at one cottage from the 1860s through to the 1890s though hey appear to change names from Williams to Roberts!)
  • William and Elizabeth Roberts (who appear in just one census 1881 but do have a baptism to the location in January 1876).

Does anyone have any connection to the location or either family in the late 1870s or early 1880s?

I'm hoping that my family stayed with relatives when they had their first child, and I can use their host family as a way to unblock a brick wall I have with this family. I know for sure that my family are elsewhere from at the very latest April 1882, with the birth record of another child Robert.

I'm hoping given the size of the cottages, and the size of families that I know live their from the census that this is a family rather than a simple lodging with strangers!!

Though maybe you have experience of multiple slate mining families residing in properties at this time?

Many thanks
Neil

Which family are you referring to as the "host" family?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

On the 1881 map the 2 properties preceding "Brynglas Bach" (No. 43 and 44 on Schedule) are "Tai Gwynion and Lleiniau".

You can see Brynglas Bach and Tai Gwynion on this 1888 map -

Thanks for your responses.

I'm not quite sure which of the two would have been the host family (that's part of the mystery). Looking at the movements (census and otherwise) of the two families that were definitely their at the time of Ellen's birth, there isn't anything obvious that connects to my family. Hoping that the address or either of the two host families ring a bell with the research of others on rootschat and/or others have experiences of lodging at this time - how common it was for whole families, tendencies to rent with strangers or fellow workers etc.

The NLS Library map (wonderful resource!) and 1871, 1881 censuses helped convince me that one of the two families must be connected. It's one of those leads (last straws?) on what has been a block to my research for so many years!

thanks again for taking the time with this one.

Neil
