SPAIN: ? Spanish ancesters
« on: Tuesday 09 August 05 07:20 BST (UK) »
I have been told that my  family originated from Spain, they were gypsies/ horse trader's .
I have no idea of how to go about finding if this is true or not, so help please.
What i do know is that i have traced my g, g,g, granddad back to his birth in 1805 Woolpit Suffolk, the family name was then Rice.
I have no idea how they got to this country and why they came.
How do i go about finding the info i need.
Thank you .

Hi Annie.
Thanks for the link i have had a look and it only starts from the 1881 census. i can trace my g g g granddad to his birth in 1805, to Woolpit in Suffolk, so am looking before then, my problem is that i am having to go on what i have been told by my mum, and grandmother, and they have been wrong before.
But thank you for your input.

Rice could be an anglicised version of Reyes (Kings) which is a very common gipsy name.  Alternatively it could be from Ruiz.

Just a thought.
