Any Family Link between Miss HOOD of Selby & DICKINSON of Darlington?
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hello

Any family link between Miss HOOD of Selby & the DICKINSON family of Darlington, showing up on holiday together in 1885 and 1889 please?

English Lakes Visitor, 15 August 1885
LIST OF VISITORS
KESWICK
Hall Mrs, Abbottsleigh House
Peddie Mrs & fam          Manchester
Dickinson Mr & fam  Darlington
Hood Miss                       Selby

Llandudno Register and Herald, 18 July 1889
Address Mrs Evans, Shrewsbury ho, Church Walks, Llandudno
Mr, Ms and Miss Barber,            Bangor
Mr, Mrs and Master Smith,        New Brighton
Mr, Mrs & Master Dickinson, Darlington
Miss Hood,                                    Selby

Now, I have just found a second earlier holiday entry 4 years earlier. DICKINSON of Darlington obviously know Miss HOOD of Selby, perhaps DICKINSON is related to another HOOD (currently unknown), please?

I'm afraid I have a brick-wall with my George HOOD of Selby (born about 1785 to 1787) before a marriage of 1815 at Selby.

There was a Jno Dickinson (Church Official) Witness to the George HOOD = Sarah RUSSELL July 1815, Selby Marriage.

Thanks, Mark

On the GRO Index, I have looked at DICKINSON Male Births 1865 to 1889 in the District of Darlington and see Mother Maiden Surnames:-

Rayner
Dixon
Smith
Stainnand
Burnside
Stairmund
No surname (1880)
Casson
Stairmand
Wilson

I can see one possible and that may be Casson.

William Hood, bapt Selby 1816, later married Jane Casson a Quaker, at Scarborough Register Office. Jane Casson was nearly dismissed from the Quakers for marrying Wm Hood, a non Quaker (in Quaker Minutes), but Jane Hood made an appeal and was allowed to remain a Quaker Member.

1881 Census Darlington (Polam Plantation)
Charles Dickinson, Head, Marr, 29, Bank Accountant, born Denby, Yorkshire
Annie Dickinson, Wife, Marr, 29, born Thorne
Henry C Dickinson, Son, 3, born Darlington [Henry Casson Dickinson]
Francis W Dickinson, Son, 1, born Darlington

I notice Polam Plantation transcribed as the Darlington Census address. There is also a School, called Polam School near a place called Quaker Lane, Darlington, today.

I wouldn't be surprised if Charles Dickinson, worked for Backhouse of Darlington, the Quaker Banker.

One thing for certain, if this is the right Dickinson family that links to Miss HOOD of Selby, it links in HORD.

At one 1787 Quaker Wedding of James Backhouse to Mary Dearman, an Elizabeth HORD is recorded as a relation.

Charles Dickinson married Annie Casson at Sunderland 16 August 1876

Both her parents are listed

John Calvert Casson and Elizabeth ?

I have a marriage for him in the BMD index for 1850 says he married Emma Dickinson.

John Calvert Casson born 1807 was the son of Mordecai C and his wife Mary.

Mordecai CASSON links to HORD.

Backhouse/Dearman wedding have HORD & PROCTER relatives.

My Grandma (died 1988) said our Hoods had married again acoss the lines.

Sometimes I wonder if George HOOD, was really George HORD.

It says in this 600+ page Biographical Dictionary of British Quakers that Henry CASSON (1769? - 1826) Miller, Tanner, was son of Mordecai Casson (1745 - 1822). Henry CASSON married in 1795 Elizabeth HORD (1769? - 1809). He was a Tanner, in Hull.

Did Henry or Elizabeth CASSON (nee HORD) leave a Will?

John Calvert CASSON born Thorne 9th November 1807, youngest Son of Mordecai CASSON (1770? - 1845) and Mary CASSON, born CALVERT (1764? - 1823).

In 1850 John Calvert CASSON married Elizabeth SMITH (1813 - 1867), daughter of Joseph SMITH (1776 - 1841) late of Sheffield, ivory merchant and Elizabeth Smith, born DICKINSON, 1779 - 1818).

Oh I need to sketch all this out another day on a roll of wallpaper ;D and see whos who. My cogs are just about to fly out of my head.

Hi Mark

Henry Casson did leave a Will held by the Borthwick, no Will for Elizabeth.

He was a wealthy man, wasn't he ?

Thanks Claire

I think my late Grandmother 45+ years ago, possibly had a few names associated with my family at Selby (discovered recently in Deed Registrations) and a knowledge that some Hood associates were Quaker. It was probably these associates that prompted certain discussions about various well known businesses, some of which were Quaker or had Quaker links.

When I was a boy there was a discussion about 'Procter and Gamble'

Cadburys was another and they do have links to the Casson surname and the Quakers.

 ----------

However, George Hood was contented with his own modest Brewery & Tannery and towards the end of his life was suffering with heart disease.
