Dotrice Family
« on: Tuesday 17 July 18 14:58 BST (UK) »
Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me with finding my great great grandfather.  His name was Jules Victor Dotrice.  He does sometimes go by Jules and others Victor.  He was born in 1842 in Belgium.  He left but do not know when but was in Guernsey in the Channel Islands by the 1881 census with his wife Marie (whom he married in Belgium in 1870) and son Oscar (born in Belgium 1874).  Now the family stayed in Guernsey for the rest of there lives except for Victor.  The family story is he died on scaffolding in New York he had gone ahead of them to make money.  They had more children born in Guernsey up until October 1881.  He is showing on the 1881 census but by the 1891 Marie is the head but still showing as married.  By the 1911 census she shows herself as widow.  I have looked in ancestry but could not find anything on him. As I say my family believe he as in New York.  Any information any one can find or has on him would be great.  If you think the name is familiar he would have been Roy Dotrice (actor) grandfather.

Yes I have seen that but not sure how he would be able to be an american citizen?  But they really play around with names etc so nothing would surprise me.  I did try and follow this person but could not find anything else on them at all?

Unusual name so you would think he would show - there was a death for a Victor Dotrici but much younger - born 1862 and passed aged 39 years - 13 March 1901 - New York  ???

I know that is my problem.  All the Dotrice are really related but this man seems to have vanished.  I have a funny feeling knowing his past that there be another new family somewhere that I know nothing about.

How did Marie describe herself in 1901  ??? Probably a daft question.  Have you checked for Guernsey death certificate ?

Thanks - So 1901 she was a worker, married and in 1911 living on own means and widowed.  Wonder if Jules did change his name, tried alternatives but nothing showing.  ???

Interesting to read about Roy and his daughter was an amazing actress as well - loved her.
