1891 Census
« on: Wednesday 18 July 18 11:40 BST (UK) »
I am unable to find my Great Grandmother listed on the 1891 census.  Have tried her maiden name and married name but no luck.  Could anyone give me a hint as to why.  Thanks

Almost all 1891 census records for Ireland were destroyed.

In other parts of the UK it's possible that you GGM's name was spelled differently by the person who filled the original form out or transcribed wrongly by either the census enumerator (who copied the original forms into an 'enumeration book' for his/her district) or during the digital transcription.

If you haven't already done so, try using 'wildcards' and perhaps a wider age/location range.

You could post your GGM's name and DOB. Perhaps someone here can find her.

Ok thanks.  Here goes.
My GGM  Mary Ann Whines  DOB  Sept. 1862 in Greenhithe.  district Dartford.
First marriage to  Henry George Fox.  1878.   Had 2 children.  Seems to have separated but no divorce.
She seems to have had a child just after the 1891 census on 2th June at 36 Uxbridge Street.Newington.  Birth was registered  in the sub discrict of Trinity Newington and registration district of St Saviour London.
The birth  certificate shows the mother as Mary Ann Whines formerly Knapp. (Cannot understand the formerly Knapp)  Shows the father as Joseph whines which is also strange because Mary Anns father is Joseph Whines and also has a brother called Joseph..
I have searched the 1891 census for Mary Ann Whines under previous married name Fox and also Knapp as Knapp is her Cousin Moses Knapp whom  she later married after having 5 children with him.  She married him in 1918 after the death of her first husband.
So I dont know whether all this will be of use for finding her on the 1891 census.
thank you.

Are you sure it's the right birth in 1891 - could it be for a different Mary Ann Whines who was born Knapp - is there another family with similar names causing confusion  :-\

What is the name of the child born in 1891?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Thanks for your reply.
Yes I have his birth certificate here.  His name is Arthur Ernest.  He is my Grandmothers oldest brother.  My GGM seemed to have registered him and my Grandmother and another brother Alfred as Whines and they all later became Knapp as their father Moses Knapp and they can all be seen on the  1901 census.

Its all very misterious.  I think it was because she was with her cousin and it was probably a bit of  a secret in those days and also the fact that she was still married to her first husband.  Her actual mothers maiden name was Knapp.

There is this birth reg:

WHINES, THOMAS        mother's maiden name KNAPP
GRO Reference: 1887  D Quarter in ST SAVIOUR SURREY  Volume 01D  Page 142

This family in the 1891 census might be worth further investigation:

Northampton Place Newington (St Saviour)

Mary A Ellis aged 28 born Kent (married) Paper Bag Maker
Lilian Ellis aged 9 born Kent
Thomas Ellis aged 3 born London
