Parishes from Wiltshire marriages that might help
« on: Wednesday 18 July 18 15:23 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for the listed parishes for these individuals, as for many marriages I know nothing of one or both of the parties marrying i.e. they did not hail from the parish of their marriage as far as I can see. I've put asterisks on the ones I'm stuck with:

John Andrews* and Mary Seates*, married in 1740 in Bremhill
John Bradfield* and Esther Little, married in 1717 in Broad Hinton
Edward Gray* and Mary Corbet, married in 1733 in Longbridge Deverill
John Hiscocks* and Elizabeth Whatley, married in 1773 in Longbridge Deverill
Thomas Keen* and Mary Pinker, married in Christian Malford in 1758
Thomas King* and Augusta Adlam, married in 1761 in Longbridge Deverill
William Provis and Betty Cale (probably from Calne)*, married in 1764 in Bremhill
Joshua Richards* and Ann Keen, married in 1784 in Bremhill
Thomas Taylor* and Mary Sims, married in 1736 in Steeple Ashton
Ambrose Whatley and Prudence Dex*, married in Longbridge Deverill in 1748
Ambrose Whatley* and Elizabeth Crofts, married in Longbridge Deverill in 1723

I'd appreciate any help!

Don't forget Wiltshire OPC
Longbridge Deverill page has links to transcripts of marriages, 1580-1749, 1750-1799, 1800-1837
https://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory/item/185-longbridge-deverill

They seem to have transcribed any info there may be as to the parish.
But they haven't the transcribed the names of witnesses found for marriages from 1754.
Obviously looking at the originals is better, but it's a useful resource.

It was particularly helpful for the King family! All the others were of the parish :( can anyone find the date of marriage from St. Denys' Church in Warminster in 1709 for Matthew King and Eleanor Ponton?

Adam,

Perhaps you should consider signing up for a FREE account at FamilySearch?  Warminster records are transcribed there and just think how much research you could do yourself without relying on others.  It's a great feeling  :)

Nell

Edit - tell a lie, that particular Wiltshire parish isn't transcribed with full dates.  I'd forgotten that  :-\

I agree with Nell, OPCs and Family Search can provide a lot of information.

From all your posts you seem to be trying to cover a lot of people at once, perhaps you should slow down a little and research one family thoroughly before going on to the next.

I have been researching for almost thirty years, and I would never try and work on so many people at the same time. Family history is so much more than just names and dates, you are likely to miss so much of interest at the rate you are going.

Even when subscription site are beyond your means, you can often access some of them at your local library. You can also uncover a lot about your family if  you simply Google a name.

I do have FamilySearch and I have searched films myself on occasion, with varying success. Frustratingly, some films come up as viewable, until you click on it and it says to view this you must go to a family history centre, which I expect I will have to do at some point. Most of my lines are back to the mid-18th century, with a handful extending back to the 17th or late 16th. I've often come short when looking through films, when that particular register is missing the one year I was looking for  ;D thankfully Bishop's transcripts exist so the records aren't lost forever. I've made good use of the Longbridge Deverill OPC, and that was extremely helpful. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Bremhill indexes or some of the other parishes I've been looking for.

Wiltshire parish records are available on Ancestry. If you do not want to subscribe to Ancestry then most town/city libraries in the UK have free access to Ancestry, sometime  Findmypast instead or also.
