Introduction.......
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 17:04 BST (UK) »

Ive just joined the board. The last time I tried any family research was about 20 years ago, lots of trips to St Catherines House, after a recent accident I've got time to start up again so any help would be great fully received.
The name I'm researching first is Bown, gone back around 3 generations and all so far have been in the clerkenwell/shorditch areas of London. Other names related through marriage are Bennett, Day, & Stotter.
Any pointers on the best places to start, websites etc would be helpful

Recently a name came up that may or may not be associated with our family, all I have is Ambrose Goslin. Would have been alive around 1900-1940, again in the clerkenwell/shoreditch areas of London
Thanks

Hi and welcome to rootschat ;D

I would start by checking what records you already have making sure you have gleaned all the information from each record. Then looking at the resources available in the areas you are looking at, each county has a resources section where other rootschatters have added which they found or think can be useful to others....and remember the internet/websites are only one tool in a very large tool box you have available to use.

Good luck with your research ;D

Leicestershire:Chamberlain, Dakin, Wilkinson, Moss, Cook, Welland, Dobson, Roper,Palfreman, Squires, Hames, Goddard, Topliss, Twells,Bacon.
Northamps:Sykes, Harris, Rice,Knowles.

Welcome from me too.

An Ambrose Goslin was born in Shoreditch in 1871 and seems to have stayed in the area in adult/married life.  Is he thought to be connected in some way to your Bown family?

As a general rule you will get the best out of Rootschat if you are as specific as possible with your inquiries, especially as to the who, where & when.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

That’s interesting avm228.
Sorry to be a bit evasive but the only info I have is that an Ambrose Goslin May have been in some sort of relationship with my grandmother Florence Duke 1886-1948. All the relatives from that era have passed on and as what was probably the custom no one ever mentioned it apart from the odd bit of gossip, which makes it more intriguing

Hi RB

I expect a lot more information is now available online compared to 20 years ago.

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are which can mean that some suggestions about resources are not available to you.

We have a London & Middlesex section with sub-boards for resources and requests which might be more specific for this type of request.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/london-and-middlesex/

If you haven't taken out subscriptions to either FindMyPast or Ancestry, check out your local library to see if they offer access in-house.

Ancestry is working with the London Metropolitan Archives to digitise, transcribe and put online, their parish register collections.

FindMyPast are working with Westminster Archives for the parish records they hold.

In addition to censuses 1841-1911, you can now get access to the 1939 register online.

If you haven't done so already please take a moment to read our guidelines for posting, noting information about the do's and don'ts of look-up requests and copyright issues.

Any pointers on the best places to start, websites etc would be helpful

The best places to start are the free sites.
FreeBMD - BMD registrations from 1837 to 1983
FreeREG - parish registers from Tudor times onwards (far from complete, but a lot of good info)
General Register Office (GRO) - particularly useful for births with mothers' maiden names
FamilySearch - particularly useful for censuses, but has plenty of other info
And various other sites depending on where you are researching.

For example: if you track Ambrose GOSLIN on censuses you might find that he lived with or near Florence DUKE.  You might also find electoral rolls online to trace where they lived.

In addition to recording the sources of information I also recommend downloading (or taking screenshots) the images.

All the best
Philip
