Kenardingham Photograph dates from cars shown
« on: Friday 20 July 18 16:54 BST (UK) »
Hello again Rootschatters.
I have another two local photographs that I am trying to date. Judging by the vehicles shown, my estimate is between 1930 and 1960, by my hope is that someone with a superior knowledge of older cars can pin the dates a bit tighter than that. Any opinions gratefully received.
Many thanks, from Scobie.

The pub obviously is the Worlds Wonder, still there, the car on the left, top picture, is a Riley dating from 1936ish, the one on the right, and the two in the bottom picture a bit earlier maybe 1930,1932

All the cars may well have lasted into the 1950s.

On the earlier side I would say 1930's/early 1940's.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

If it were wartime the cars would have the mandatory masks on the headlamps, I would say late thirties but there is an unexplained nagging doubt, I think the photo is showing off the cars, the big Riley on the left is an expensive motor car.

In the second photo, is the small car just beyond the pub a 1933 Austin 7?

Also in that one, are you able to get a higher resolution scan of the number plate on the nearer car? As with the cars themselves it won't give us an end date, but it might help to work out 'no earlier than'.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Hello again Rootschatters.
Thank you Mazi, Milliepede and Arthurk for your replies.
It seems to be that the general opinion is that the vehicles themselves are all from the 1930’s.
The bulk of the local photographs that I have collected are stored on my computer and come from various sources. Those originals copies which I own or have managed to borrow and copy are of a high resolution, but others are not so good. I am afraid, Arthurk, that the second photo falls into the latter category and that is the best I have.
I am quite happy to date the photo’s as 1930’s but, with petrol rationing from 1939 to 1950 when many vehicles were probably in storage, I am wary that many would have resurfaced in the 1950’s. However, the cars shown appear in very good condition for being in the region 20 years old. But I do now have an idea of the types of vehicles. Again, any opinions gratefully received and taken into account.
Many thanks, from Scobie.
